- International Archer Jyoti Surekha says that sports and academics are equally important for students.
In a compelling blend of athleticism and academia, international archer Jyoti Surekha echoes a sentiment often overlooked—the equal importance of sports and education in an individual’s holistic development. Recognizing the relationship between physical activity and intellectual pursuits, Surekha articulates the notion that both sports and education contribute profoundly to an individual’s overall well-being.
Education holds paramount significance for everyone, but international archer Jyothi Surekha emphasizes the invaluable role of engaging in at least one sport or game for every student. She made this trailblazing statement, at the Children’s Day celebrations at Zilla Parishad High School in Nunna near Vijayawada.
- The Pivotal Role of Parents
Encouraging parental involvement, she urged parents to motivate their children to actively participate in sports or engage in extracurricular activities. Drawing inspiration from the success stories of numerous national and international players who have secured government jobs across diverse sectors, including herself as a deputy collector, Surekha emphasized the rewarding outcomes of hard work. During the event, she felicitated the achievements of Karthika and Saranya, gold medalists in the recently concluded School Games Federation of India (SGFI), Andhra Pradesh Inter-District Wrestling Championship. Additionally, Surekha presented the under-19 girls’ overall championship trophy to the accomplished wrestlers.
Later, Nunna ZP High School headmaster Vazrala Bhupal Reddy, teaching staff and Old Students’ Association representative Naredla Satyanarayana Reddy felicitated Jyothi and her father V Surendra. Other officials and school staff participated in the event.
- Why stress on interconnecting physical education and general education?
The NEP 2020, and the earlier policies and programs which existed focused on sports as a major component, due to the unavoidable benefits and growth milestones associated with it. We can’t avoid the fact that it is essential to develop physical stamina in children from their early years. Similarly, frequent participation in sports-related activities helps students to acquire leadership skills and sportsman spirit, along with the need for healthy competition. It should also be noted that physical development is linked with other aspects of the development and learning of a child.
The Prime Minister of our nation, Sh. Narendra Modi said that sports could no longer be ignored in the school curriculum and the New Education Policy placed it in the same category as other subjects.
Famous cricketer Sachin Tendulkar said that sports and education are the cornerstones of a progressive society. By fostering both, we empower individuals to excel not only in the classroom but also on the playing field, creating well-rounded citizens.
Famous Badminton player, and first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal, P V Sindhu, said that balancing academics and sports is not a trade-off; it’s an investment in a child’s overall development. By giving equal importance to both, we nurture individuals who can thrive in any endeavor.
The very concept of stressing physical activities has come up due to the rapid decline in outdoor games and activities in the overly comfortable digital era. Children these days are in front of the television or busy scrolling social media sites or entertaining themselves with online games. Parents also rarely encourage them to go out and play, nor are they able to accompany them for the same due to their terribly busy work schedules. This scenario in the lives of our growing generation made the relevance of sports in education a matter of importance.
NEP’s Stand
The National Education Policy ( NEP 2020) has placed special mention on the inclusion of sports and physical education as an inevitable element of the education system. NEP 2020 envisages sports as a part of the curriculum and lays emphasis on sports-integrated learning as well as adopting fitness as a lifelong attitude.
As India strives for excellence on the global stage, it becomes imperative to recognize that fostering both intellectual acumen and physical fitness is not just a choice but a necessity. By affording equal importance to sports and education, we pave the way for a society of individuals equipped not only with academic brilliance but also the fortitude and resilience gained through sporting pursuits.
