Ocean Station is an environmental learning and awareness space developed by the Environmentalist Foundation of India (E.F.I) in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Government. It is designed to help children, youth, and the public explore the wonders of ocean ecosystems while also understanding the urgent challenges our m face today.
The ocean is one of the most powerful life-support systems on our planet. It regulates climate, produces oxygen, supports biodiversity, and sustains millions of lives. Yet for many, the ocean remains something to admire from a distance rather than understand deeply.
Ocean Station is a space for learning, reflection, and action. Through thoughtfully curated displays, engaging educational content, interactive experiences, and environmental storytelling, visitors are introduced to the richness of marine life and the importance of coastal ecosystems. It also brings attention to pressing issues such as plastic pollution, habitat degradation, biodiversity loss, and the everyday human actions that impact our oceans.
As part of the experience, students participated in a beach bingo activity spotting items that do not belong on a coastline. From plastic spoons and bottle caps to broken glass, discarded electronics, clothes, and even dead marine life, they were surprised to find almost everything on their list. What began as an engaging activity naturally turned into a clean-up, sparking a deeper realization of how everyday waste finds its way into the ocean. The collected plastic waste mainly bottle caps, spoons, and covers was then transformed into a turtle art installation, now displayed at Ocean Station as a powerful visual reminder of the issue.
Students also took part in an ocean-themed quiz that encouraged them to think critically about marine ecosystems and conservation, followed by a documentary screening on ocean pollution, further deepening their understanding of the challenges our oceans face.
What makes Ocean Station truly special is its ability to turn awareness into emotional connection. It is not just about sharing information it is about helping people feel the importance of the ocean and recognize their role in protecting it.
