Surat: It was a moment of mixed emotions for the family of Dr Miraj Shah when they received a letter from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, offering him a spot on their postgraduate programme in medicine.
Miraj, a medical graduate from BJ Medical College, Ahmedabad, died by suicide on Nov 14. Since his death, the family have received admission offers from 12 top medical institutes worldwide, including Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, New York Medical College and George Washington University.
“Miraj applied to about 15 top medical institutes and received offer letters from 12. It is a matter of pride for us, but unfortunately, he is not with us now,” said his father, Amit Shah, his voice filled with emotion.
Miraj ended his life at his house in the Umra area of the city by hanging himself from a ceiling fan. On that fateful day, he had discussed his study plans for the future with his family and then went into his room. The family told police they could not find any reason for his extreme step.
Police investigated the matter and registered a case of accidental death. They have not found any prime reason for his suicide.
