As Three Indian-Origin PMs Rule Europe, the Diaspora is Experiencing New High

From Rishi Sunak becoming the PM of the UK to Leo Varadkar becoming the head of state in Ireland, Europe is becoming the political home ground for Indian Diaspora.

While it was only a matter of time before a prime minister of Indian origin would be elected in the UK, it was something unheard of in Ireland. The election of Indian-origin prime ministers in different European countries is significant on two counts: one, both countries have Indian-origin prime ministers for the first time and second, such a swap in politics has happened for the first time in Ireland.

Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, the two main rival parties in Ireland, reached a coalition agreement in April 2020 since there was no clear majority after the election. For the first time, the two parties had agreed to share governance. The two parties, with roots in the Irish Civil War, agreed to have Micheal Martin of Fianna Fáil as the PM of Ireland until December 2022. Following this, Varadkar of Fine Gael would take over.

The third country is Portugal with an Indian-origin prime minister. Antonio Costa, the PM of Portugal, has been in office since 2014. Born to a Goan Father, Costa has successfully been leading his Socialist Party. Costa’s Socialist Party won the last election in 2022 with a clear majority.

Varadkar is a qualified medical doctor and is now the prime minister of Ireland. The Irish prime minister visited his ancestral village in Maharashtra back in 2019.

An article published on Zawya mentioned the following:

“Varadkar, 43, and Sunak, 42, head their governments at a sensitive time, particularly given the continuing passions over the Northern Ireland Protocol, which is part of the withdrawal agreement between the UK and the European Union. Ireland is an EU member-state, while the UK is out of it, still coming to terms with all the implications of Brexit…”

India and Ireland have both been English colonies in the past; however, the tide has changed as two politicians of Indian origin found the top place of power in their countries.

The Zawya article mentions:

“…But now descendants of Indian immigrants are in a position to rule and resolve key issues plaguing the UK and Ireland. The backstory of both Varadkar and Sunak are similar in some ways, but also different, and being of similar age and outlook may be an advantage in efforts to resolve the Northern Ireland conundrum.”
