ONLINE VERSUS OFFLINE-The battle between digital and the traditional!
- Why is online learning becoming a trend?
Digital learning is inevitable
Online classes and e-learning have gained much more momentum since the COVID 19 pandemic. Online classes surpass the time and geographical barriers, making it impressive to a large number of students and teachers. With digital platforms on the rise, the knowledge transaction process can be done at the comfort of home. The proponents of digital learning argue that online learning provides the benefits of interactive multimedia, gamified content, and personalized learning experiences. Most of the students, parents, and teachers have also said that in this fast-paced era of digital advancement, technologically driven learning methods are required to build a tech-savvy generation, who can fit into the industry requirements.-The battle between digital and the traditional!
Classroom learning better than virtual learning
On the other hand, traditional classroom learning has been the cornerstone of the education system for years. And switching to a virtual mode completely is much easier said than done. The physical presence of a teacher, and a room full of like minded classmates, go a long way in building several character traits in children, which the virtual classroom can’t provide. The advocates of classroom learning put forward the opinion that classrooms are much better in providing a structured environment for face-to-face interaction, immediate feedback, and a sense of community. Similarly, many students and parents say that digital learning brings in more disparities among the haves and have nots, because not everyone will be having the resources needed to access online learning.
- How to strike a balance?
Finding a balance between the use of physical and online modes of learning methodology appears to be more of a practical solution for several others. Many educational institutions also agree with this aspect, and have adopted hybrid modes of learning, incorporating both digital advantages as well as the invaluable benefits of in person instruction and socialization. Infact, more and more schools and higher educational institutions are embracing the idea of introducing hybrid modes of learning. This transition shows evidence that the future of education may involve a nuanced combination of both online and classroom learning.
Salman Khan, founder of Khan Academy said that online learning can empower students to learn at their own pace and fill knowledge gaps. Yet, the human connection in a physical classroom is irreplaceable. The ideal education model might be a thoughtful integration of both.
Striking a balance that leverages the strengths of both online and classroom learning while addressing their respective challenges will likely shape the educational landscape in the years to come.
Considering the present scenario of digitalization and post pandemic environment, it would be in the best interest of students, parents, and teachers to opt for more hybrid modes of education, that involve benefits of both in person teaching-learning and digital advancement.
