New Delhi: A man killed his 45-year-old mother in west Delhi’s Khyala after she objected to his marriage to the woman he loved. He strangled her and then made a PCR call, claiming that someone killed her during a robbery. However, police found no signs of a robbery, and upon sustained questioning, the son confessed to the crime.
The deceased was identified as Sulochna, who lived with her family in Raghubir Nagar. Police received a PCR call at 8:30 pm on Friday, during which the caller, Sawan, stated that his mother was killed by someone and that her earrings were taken.
“Examination of the crime scene did not suggest a robbery, as there was no ransacking of the place and the valuables were found intact in the house. A case was registered for murder and several teams were formed to investigate the matter,” said deputy commissioner of police (West) Vichitra Veer.
“To gather more information about the events leading up to the incident, the family members of the woman were interrogated. Simultaneously, the investigation teams were also working on gathering technical information and questioning the neighbours. During this process, the conduct of the younger son, Sawan (22), was found to be suspicious,” the officer added.
Sulochna’s husband passed away in 2019, and she had two unmarried sons.
Sustained questioning led Sawan to admit to the crime. He told police that his brother Kapil’s marriage was recently arranged. He also told his mother that he wanted to marry a woman he knew for some time. According to him, his mother scolded him for this and threatened that if he insisted, he would be excluded from inheriting any property.
“It upset Sawan, who claimed to give all his earnings to his mother. Hurt by her reaction, he decided to kill her. He then created an alibi to mislead police, but the cops connected the dots diligently, leading to the detection of the crime within a few hours,” another officer said.
The elder brother of the accused was at his office when the accused murdered their mother between 4.30 pm and 6.30 pm. Kapil works as an accountant, while Sawan runs a goods transport vehicle.
This incident marks the second such case in recent times, following an incident in Neb Sarai where a 20-year-old man killed his father, mother and sister. Police stated that property dispute was one of the motives behind the murder. They are also investigating whether the accused’s family objected to his choice of partner.
