While Shiva is associated with the destructive forces of nature, he has a mystical side that is rarely understood or explored. The powerful Hindu god also has a human side that makes him approachable to the devotees.

Sadguru recently took to his Twitter handle to share his feeling about the human side of the powerful deity. He wrote:

“If Shiva did not grieve over Sati’s terrible demise, I would not consider him Divine at all. He was not inhuman, but Super Human.”

Shiva is worshipped by millions of devotees throughout the world, yet his true nature remains shrouded in mystery. While some consider him to be the god of death and destruction, others consider him to be a mystic yogi who dwells with bhutas and pretas in crematoriums.

What does the word Shiva signify? Philosophers and spiritual gurus have tried explaining what the word “Shiva” implies. But the simplest way of understanding the word is to break it into two: “Shi” and “Va.” The two together mean “that which is not.”

So what does it mean to be the vast “nothingness”? To understand this deep philosophy, one needs to take references from Vedanta philosophies and understand the concept of Brahman. While it is difficult to understand Brahman, enlightened masters of the past have tried to simplify the complicated and deep knowledge of Brahman.

Brahman is absolute and one without a second. The unmanifested reality of god is Brahman: a difficult concept for the mind to grasp. Brahman or Parabrahman exists beyond time and space, yet everything that is created exists in Brahman. In living organisms, Brahman is present as then Atman: the very essence of life.

The ancient seers explain Brahaman in negative terms. Why? The fact that Brahman cannot be explained through what it is makes it difficult for the mind to absorb the concept, so the enlightened masters explain Brahman through what it is not.

Brahman is not light

It is not darkness

It is not the colors

It is not colorless

It is not living

It is not dead

It is not the undead

It is not sound

It is not silence

It is not here

It is not there

It is that which is not: It is Shiva!

The contradictory statements make it even more difficult to understand Shiva. However, in his manifested form, Shiva has a human side. He is married but a Yogi. He has a family but is alone. He dances but sits quietly. He creates music but is silent. The contradiction is prevalent even in his manifested form.
