Sanatan Dharma Teaches Tolerance

Tolerance is one of the key principles of Sanatan Dharma. Be it religious tolerance or personal, Sanatan Dharma propounds the thought that tolerance is the gateway to peace and bliss.

Rig Veda, arguably the oldest existing text in the world, mentions, “Let the knowledge come from every direction.” This singular statement is very simple but has manifold implications. One can gauge the superior nature of Sanatan through this statement alone. This free thought has allowed people of different castes, sects, and religions to coexist in harmony for centuries in end.

India has been subjected to various attacks and colonialism for several centuries, but because of India’s free thought, it has assimilated foreign cultures, traditions, and religions into its bosom.

Historically, there have been several attacks on Sanatan Dharma, but it has stood the test of time as millions follow the Dharma in the Indian sub-continent. Recently, a leader of a major political party attacked Sanatan Dharma by comparing it to “Dengue” and “Malaria.”

An article published on Shaivam mentions the following:

“…There should be enough actions to come out of the forces that disturb this holy dharma. Being good also means being rigid many times to uphold good principles. The followers of the dharma have to give a good thought about this before it goes too late. But of course with the very basic element – the love for all the creatures in the world – uncompromised.”

While many articles and videos talk about the religious tolerance that Sanatan Dharam preaches, not many mention how one can reach the state of tolerance. Tolerance in concept is different from practice. While it is easy to talk about tolerance, understanding what it means and reaching the state is difficult.

We, at Airr News, will try to convey the complex thought in the simplest way possible.

The aim of Sanatan Dharma is self-realization. A self-realized person has understood that the individual self is one and the same as the cosmic self. Everything that is created comes from the supreme self, making everything inherently divine. An illumined mind that sees itself for what it truly is, realizes the self. One can achieve this state of realization through meditation, yoga, or simply by observing everything around him for a prolonged period.

Upon realizing the true nature of the self and reality, he understands everything to be a part of the cosmic whole, allowing him to accept everything as it is. This makes him truly tolerant of everything. That, dear friends, is true tolerance.
