Sanatana Dharma has existed for hundreds of thousands of years. Due to archeological and factual inaccuracies, no one can pinpoint the exact time of the birth of Sanatana Dharma.
Civilizations are born and fade away never to be remembered. While Historians and archeologists have discovered several ancient civilizations, they have barely scratched the surface. Historians and researchers have tried to uncover the roots of Sanatan Dharma, but have gotten more confused.
In this episode, we will explore the roots of Sanatan Dharma. When I say root, it indicates two things: one, the birth of the religion, and two, the basis of the religion.
Let me, at the very onset, clarify that Sanatana Dharma is not a religion; instead, it is a way of life, a philosophy, or an eternal law.
Researchers and historians are conflicted in their idea of the roots or origins of Sanatan Dharma. While there are several reasons for the conflicting theories, I will choose the simplest one. The history of its existence! It has existed for hundreds of thousands of years, which makes it difficult for historians and researchers to come up with a particular timeframe.
Now that we know the origins of Sanatana Dharma is almost impossible to decode, let us focus now on the philosophy.
When we talk about Sanatana Dharma, one immediately thinks about Tantra, Mantra, and Magic. However, it is more than that. The Dharmic scriptures contain astronomy, surgery, medicine, mathematics, science, geography, history, tantra, yoga, philosophy, Vedas, Vedanta, Vedanga, and many more! However, the root of Santana is the absolute reality. How you may ask? All the subjects I mentioned that form the basis of Sanatana Dharma is the quest to realize the self. The philosophy is divided into Para Vidya and Apara Vidya. Apara Vidya is lower knowledge which contains all the subjects that are included in the Dharmic scriptures. Be it the Vedas or mathematics, the knowledge of the empirical objective world does not go beyond the human intellect.
Para Vidya, on the other hand, is direct knowledge: the realization of the self. However, ancient seers and masters have made it clear that Apara Vidya is an essential step towards Para Vidya.
The root of Santan Dharma lies in the realization of the self!
In the next episodes, we will explore more about the complex philosophies of Sanatan.
