Roadmap to Indigenization of Defense Manufacturing

The Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, during the plenary session at New Delhi, announced India’s latest list of domestically produced military goods at Swavlamban 2.0 on Wednesday. The two-day seminar by the Naval Innovation and Indigenization Organization (NIIO) focused on the fifth Positive Indigenization List of the Department of Military Affairs (DMA).

The minister released a list of futuristic military equipment, including infantry combat vehicles, remotely piloted vehicles, weapons, sensors, and robotic aerial systems for naval platform systems.

“Highly complex systems, sensors, weapons, and ammunition have been included in the list. All these items will be procured from indigenous sources as per provisions given in Defense Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020 in a staggered timeline,” Rajnath Singh, Defense Minister stated.

During the seminar, Defense Minister Singh presented 76 challenges for the industry under the 10th Defense India Start-up Challenges (DISC 10) and DISC 10 PRIME of IDEX. Rajnath Singh launched the ‘INDUS-X Mutual Promotion of Advanced Collaborative Technologies’ (IMPACT) challenges jointly finalized by iDEX and the US Department of Defense (DoD). The DoD and IDEX organized an India and US Defense Acceleration Ecosystem event in Washington to promote strategic technology alliances for the defense industry.

During the seminar, the Minister emphasized the importance of self-reliance, or “aatmanirbharta.” In the past, India was known for being self-sufficient and had a reputation for its advanced knowledge of science and technology, innovation, and skilled workforce. India’s rich culture is reflected in its production and locally made goods, which once dominated the world market before the influence of the Eurocentric mentality on the latter generations.

India is currently experiencing a resurgence in recognizing its potential and reclaiming its place as a global leader in technology and skills. It is evident in their successful Chandrayan 3 mission, accomplished at a cost significantly lower than the norm, and their use of state-of-the-art technology.

“In the coming times, they will play a big role in the development of the country with their innovative approach and knowledge.”

The minister recently launched the SBI NAVeCash Card, a one-of-a-kind debit card with dual chips. The State Bank of India (SBI) partnered with the Indian Navy to develop this innovative card that can be used online like a regular debit card and offline when Navy personnel are at sea and unable to connect directly to the bank. The card underwent testing on Indian Naval ships and is now ready for a pan-Navy launch through the defense ministry.

“The card is a positive step towards the prime minister’s dream of digital India with cashless financial transactions as it obviates the usage of cash onboard ships even in high seas,” it said.

India is poised to become a major player in the global economy in the years ahead. The government’s “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative has been promoting domestic production across all sectors, resulting in new partnerships and bilateral ties. One remarkable development has been India’s ability to indigenously manufacture military goods, which had been difficult to achieve in the past. India’s growing status as a powerful nation is also reflected in its export of defense goods.
