Speaking at a press meet in Mumbai along with skipper Rohit Sharma, Agarkar said, “It’s not his (Rinku) fault. He is still travelling as a sub. It can be difficult for him. I think he was not chosen because of the team balance and we wanted an extra spinner,” he said. –Rinku Singh was dropped icc 20 news
On Rahul, he added, “KL is terrific but, we wanted ones who could bat in the middle. KL bats higher in the order.”
Skipper Rohit Sharma speaking on Shivam Dube’s inclusion said, “Our top order has been bang on. Someone in the middle who could play freely was required and we chose him based on his IPL showing. But our playing XI is still not assured.”
Agarkar talking about the World Cup said, “If the World Cup is like the IPL where 220-230 is the in thing, we’ve enough wherewithals in the team.”
On Hardik Pandya the unanimous view was “If he is fit, there is never any question mark over his inclusion”
On all-rounders Rohit said, “They have o repeat their IPL performance. Shivam hasn’t bowled in IPL. If we want Shivam to bowl he will be bowling and it’s the same case with Hardik.”
On the absence of an off- spinner, Rohit was quoted by India Today, “Unfortunately, Washington (Sundar) hasn’t played any cricket lately, It was between (R) Ashwin and Axar (Patel) but Ashwin hasn’t played T20 cricket recently. Axar was Player of the series against Australia in November-December 2023 which pushed him ahead.”
On the role of spinners. Rohit added, “I will talk about it in West Indies. I personally looked for four spinners and Hardik as a pace all-rounder. Axar and Ravindra Jadeja can bat and Kuldeep (Yadav) and (Y) Chahal can be aggressive with the ball which is the right balance.”
On IPL being the criterion for the selection, Rohit said, “A lot of preparations and discussions take place during the IPL and they have been in this version for a long time. They all have been in international cricket and the IPL. The combination was discussed before the IPL.”
