Paranur Thangal, located in Paranur village, is one of the many significant waterbodies in the Chengalpattu–Chennai region. With forests and a massive tech park to the north, Kolavai Lake to the south, and Paranur village to the east, this lake plays an important role in the local hydrological landscape.Over the years, the waterbody faced serious threats including extensive garbage dumping, the spread of invasive weeds, poorly maintained structures, excess silt deposition, and an unregulated inlet system. Recognizing the urgency, the Chengalpattu District Administration and E.F.I undertook the restoration of this lake through a collaborative effort under the #BlueGreenChengalpattu initiative to improve groundwater recharge and enhance surface water storage.

Today, with the restoration complete, community recharge wells have been established around the lake, and the waterbody is now being used as a drinking water source for nearby villages. The revival of Paranur Thangal stands as a powerful reminder that restoring our traditional waterbodies is key to securing water for both people and biodiversity.
