RAJKOT: A 28-year-old man died by suicide at his home in the city, allegedly due to mental harassment inflicted by his estranged wife and her family members.
The deceased, Mahesh Vinjuda, was employed as a driver in a factory in the industrial area of Metoda adjoining the city, but he quit the job some months ago due to persistent harassment from his wife, her father, and two brothers. His younger brother, Piyush Vinjuda, filed a complaint against Mahesh’s wife, Hetal, her father, Karshan Bata, and her brothers, Kamlesh and Vimal, at the University Police Station for abetment of suicide.
The police also recovered a two-page suicide note, purportedly written by Mahesh, in which he detailed the mental torture that took a toll on him.
The complaint states that the accused threatened to make Mahesh’s life ‘miserable’ and issued death threats if he did not pay her lump sum maintenance money.
Hetal filed a case for alimony against Mahesh, but she refused to divorce him, it is alleged.
Piyush found him hanging in their flat in Parivar Housing Society on Kalavad Road on Tuesday evening when he returned from work.
Hetal and Piyush were married for five years. She returned to her parents’ house about 18 months ago due to marital discord, bringing their daughter along. Mahesh’s distress intensified due to separation from his daughter, as he was not allowed to meet her.
The suicide note claims that Mahesh discovered Hetal’s previous marriage in Thangadh in Surendranagar district, which ended similarly, with her then-husband dying by suicide.
Despite several reconciliation attempts, Mahesh was allegedly subjected to threats and assaults by Hetal’s family. Just three days before his death, Mahesh visited the family’s home in Virda Vajdi village in another bid to reconcile but was turned away with further threats, the complaint alleges.
