Preeti Sudan, former Union Health Secretary, has been appointed as the UPSC chairperson. In 2022, she was appointed as a member of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

She will take charge as the UPSC chairperson starting August 1.

Sudan is a 1983 batch (retired) IAS officer of the Andhra Pradesh cadre. She superannuated as the health secretary in July 2020 and also served in the Women and Child Development and Defence Ministries.

In her cadre state Andhra Pradesh, she handled finance and planning, disaster management, tourism and agriculture.

The appointment comes after the former chairperson Manoj Soni had resigned earlier this month, ahead of the end of his tenure. He had resigned for “personal reasons”

Sudan has earned a degree in Economics and Social Policy and Planning from the London School of Economics and was trained in public finance management in Washington, as per reports.

One of the most notable phases of Preeti Sudan’s career was her tenure as the Union Health Secretary. During this period, she played a pivotal role in steering India’s health policies and programs. Her efforts were particularly commendable during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, where she was instrumental in the planning and execution of strategies to curb the spread of the virus and manage the health infrastructure.

In 2022, Preeti Sudan was appointed as a member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), an institution responsible for selecting and recommending candidates for various civil services positions in the Indian government. Her appointment as a UPSC member was a testament to her expertise and experience in public administration.

As she takes charge as the Chairperson of the UPSC, Preeti Sudan brings with her a wealth of knowledge and a proven track record of excellence. The UPSC, being the backbone of India’s civil services, requires a leader who can uphold its values of integrity, impartiality, and transparency. Sudan’s extensive experience in the civil services and her previous role within the UPSC make her a fitting choice for this prestigious position.

Her leadership is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the UPSC, ensuring that the commission continues to function with the highest standards of efficiency and fairness. With her at the helm, aspirants of the civil services can look forward to a robust and transparent selection process.
