From economic backlash to unimaginable destruction, a war in the modern world could only bring more harm than good.
The recent attempt by President Zelensky to attain peace and end the war only goes to show the unimaginable damage done in Ukraine. The world does not need war any more than it needs nuclear warheads.-PM Narendra Modi’s Support to End the War-part 2
Let us explore a few reasons why the world should avoid wars at any costs.
One: No one can win a war
Most powerful nations of the world today are armed with deadly weapons of mass destruction, especially the atom bombs. The Nuclear bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima are toys when compared to modern Nukes. If a Nuclear-armed nation attacks another country with an atomic arsenal, the result will be catastrophic. Not only will such nations destroy each other but completely eradicate other smaller countries surrounding them.
Two: Kills civilians and creates refugees
Not only do wars kill soldiers, it also harms and puts civilian to death. War also causes millions to flee their homes and turn them into refugees in another country.
An article published on Mennonite Central Committee mention the following:
“In the 20th century, some 200 million people were killed in war, and many millions have already been killed in this century. War not only kills, it also mains people, separates family members, causes disease, hunger and other forms of deprivation. Toxic substances released by some weapons result in severe birth defects, long after wars are officially over. Another frequent weapon of war is rape and other forms of sexual violence against women and girls. The human cost of war is staggering and the impacts extend over generations.”
Three: Hampers development
Another direct result of a war is that it hampers development. From the destruction of hospitals to schools to other infrastructures, wars only contribute to damage.
“The destruction of homes, schools and hospitals, as well as transportation, electrical, water treatment and sanitation systems in wartime can set back economic, social and community development for decades. Wars prevent farmers from farming, children and youth from going to school and ordinary people from going to work. A typical civil war in a medium-sized country costs more than 30 years of GDP growth. No wonder the United Nations in 2015 identified the promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies as one of its key Sustainable Development Goals.”
