Interns across 34 states and union territories have begun their professional journeys under the Pradhan Mantri Internship Scheme (PMIS), marking a significant milestone in the government’s initiative to boost youth employability. Senior officials from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs virtually interacted with the first cohort of its flagship internship program and their supervisors on Wednesday, December 4, underscoring the importance of hands-on training and mentorship in diverse sectors.

The Pradhan Mantri Internship Scheme (PMIS) has launched its pilot phase, offering over 1.25 lakh internship opportunities to youth aged 21-24 across India. Interns from 656 districts have begun their placements in top companies spanning 34 states and union territories.

Under the scheme, each intern will receive a monthly allowance of ₹5,000 for 12 months, along with a one-time grant of ₹6,000 disbursed through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The government aims to enhance youth employability and leverage India’s demographic dividend through this initiative.

Interns have been placed in diverse sectors, including finance, manufacturing, and energy. Companies such as Vedanta, ONGC, Titan, and Maruti Suzuki are providing hands-on training at locations ranging from Jammu to Kanyakumari and the Andaman Islands to Jharsuguda.

Companies are offering holistic support to ensure a smooth transition for interns. ONGC and EMCURE provide accommodations, while Maruti Suzuki and Alkem Labs have designed induction and technical training programs. Transport and health insurance are also being facilitated by several firms.

The Ministry of Corporate Affairs lauded the enthusiasm from both companies and interns, emphasising the scheme’s role in fostering inclusive growth and skill development. With over 6.2 lakh applications received, the selection process for additional candidates is ongoing.

The PMIS is expected to be a stepping stone for thousands of young Indians, bridging the gap between education and employability.
