From Personal Laws to Equal Cause: The Uniform Civil Code Journey.

Today we’re going to talk about Gender Equality and the Uniform Civil Code in India, which is a very important and often-debated subject.

Equality between men and women is not just a term; it’s a basic idea that supports a society that is moving forward.

Let’s talk about the Uniform Civil Code now. This is basically a plan to get rid of religiously-based personal laws and replace them with a single set of laws that apply to everyone.

What does this matter? People who support a standard rule say that it makes things more fair, especially when it comes to marriage, divorce, and property. However, as you might expect, this idea has caused some debate.

Union minister Amit Shah says a Uniform Civil Code has been on the BJP’s agenda since the day our party was formed. He stated in an interview that although the elections might appear divided from the outside, it is the BJP’s development efforts that are generating discussion on the ground. In addition, Amit Shah disregarded the alliance of opposition parties against the BJP as an opportunity for pictures and stated that it would not affect the outcome of the coming parliament election 2024.

A group of judges led by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and including Justice Mini Pushkarna said that the Law Commission was looking into this matter again and the court did not want to get involved.

That’s why we need to hear from people whose lives are affected by these personal rules. Their stories show us how complicated the argument over the Uniform Civil Code is.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge recent statement is totally against “We are clear that there can be nothing uniform about all laws. How can the country have the same civil laws for North East, South India, Muslims and Hindus? However, some angularity of individual laws can be looked at.

It is said that Uttarakhand will be the first state in the country to use the Uniform Civil Code. As soon as possible, a group led by former Justice Ranjana Desai will give a report to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.

Different people have different opinions about the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and equal rights for men and women. The supporters say that a UCC could help achieve gender justice by providing a uniform set of laws that would get rid of unfair practises in personal laws. But critics are worried about how it might hurt ethnic variety and make it harder to make sure that everyone is treated fairly.

The Delhi High Court turned down a group of requests on 1st december 2023 to direct the Centre to make a Uniform Civil Code (UCC). They did this by citing a Supreme Court ruling that said such issues should be decided by the Parliament.
