Orry aka Orhan Awatramani is an internet personality and BFF to all Bollywood star kids. Known for his quirky outfits, flamboyant attitude, and more, he is one such personality, who can love or hate but can’t ignore. Being an internet sensation, he makes sure to keep up with all the social media trends, and as of now the latest viral content that caught his attention was – ‘caramelised popcorn.’
For the unversed, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the 55th GST Council meeting on Saturday shared that caramelised popcorn with added sugar will be taxed differently than salted and plain popcorn. So while the GST rate on unpackaged and unlabelled popcorn mixed with salt and spices is 5 percent, caramelised popcorn’s GTS rate is 18 percent.
As the news of the revised GST rate came out, a lot of harmless fun memes were created, and Orry has joined the same bandwagon. Taking to his social media handle, Orry shared a video, in which he showed different types of popcorn on a cart. Pointing at the salted and carmalised snacks he said, “He we have ‘namkeen’ (salted) popcorn and here we have ‘non-namkeen’ (unsalted) popcorn. This is 5 per cent GST, this is 18 per cent GST, I am also 18 per cent GST.”
In the caption of the video he mentioned – “It’s because I am sweet 🤭 18% GTS.”
The post went viral in no time. Several comments came flooding in, one even pointed out how the Finance Minister got Orry to talk about taxes. “Nirmala Tai got orry talk about taxes😂,” wrote a fan, while another one penned a sweet note for Orry saying, “You are 100 💯 % GST😍.” On the same hand, Orry himself indulged in more fun and commented – “caramel popcorn is injurious to financial health”
Meanwhile, explaining the decision on 18 per cent GST on caramelised popcorn, FM said the snack is classified as sugar confectionery. “Salted, caramelised, plain popcorn is being sold as namkeen in certain states. Caramelised popcorn comes with added sugar, so the treatment rate is different from namkeen,” she mentioned in the meeting.
