MUMBAI: A tragic accident at Miragaon station on December 4 claimed the life of a Transit Mixer (TM) operator, who sustained fatal injuries when the mixer toppled into an excavation on Wednesday evening.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is conducting construction work for Line 9, connecting Dahisar and Bhayander. The incident occurred around 10:30 pm during preparations for Plain Cement Concrete (PCC) work on an underground fire tank.
The operator, identified as Ashish, was reversing the TM into position when he misjudged the edge of the pit. This caused the mixer to lose balance and fall into the excavation. Ashish sustained critical injuries and was unable to escape in time.
Rescue operations were immediately launched, and Ashish was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The site was promptly secured with barricades and green netting to enhance safety.
An MMRDA official said, “Despite immediate rescue efforts, Ashish could not be saved. Fortunately, no other casualties were reported.”
Expressing regret over the incident, an MMRDA spokesperson said, “We deeply mourn the tragic loss of life and extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. In line with our strict zero-accident policy, a fine of Rs. 10 lakh has been imposed on the General Consultant, M/s Systra Consortium, and Rs. 30 lakh on the contractor, J Kumar.”
The spokesperson further added, “MMRDA will implement additional stringent measures based on the findings of the final investigation report.”
