Neymar’s stint in France came to an end last year with his switch to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.
Brazilian superstar Neymar back in 2017, made a blockbuster move to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) from Barcelona. His stint in France ended in 2023 with his switch to Saudi Arabian giants, Al-Hilal. During his stay in Paris, Neymar had a topsy-turvy relationship with PSG fans. There were reported demonstrations by furious fans against club chiefs and outside Neymar’s house. It was even reported many people gathered outside his house, shouting that the Brazilian forward should leave the club. “Neymar get out,” chants were reportedly heard back then.
Lionel Messi, Neymar’s former teammate in both Barcelona and PSG, also had to face the supporters’ backlash. Neymar recently recalled his stint at PSG and stated he still holds some ‘resentment’ to some people who run the club.
“The first year was magnificent. I was very well received by the French people and supporters. The last two or three years have not been the same. It was not incredible the way they treated me. It’s the same for Lionel Messi. For me, there was injustice, as I always gave my all on the pitch. I have no resentment, but I was a little sad about the way the supporters treated me, especially when they came to my house, when they wanted to invade my house, insult me or want to hit me,” Neymar told RMC.
“For me, they crossed the line. Our relationship was no longer respectful, while I always respected them… It was a complicated situation. I was sad about the way I was treated in the end, but it passed. I respect the PSG club and I will always support them so that they have the best results. I have no resentment towards the club, I just have a little resentment towards people who manage the club and some supporters,” Neymar added.
Neymar signed for PSG for a world-record €222 million (£200 million/$242 million) fees from Barcelona. At PSG, Neymar scored 118 goals in 173 appearances and won several trophies, including five Ligue 1 titles. But Neymar failed to guide PSG to the much-coveted Champions League trophy. PSG had reached the Champions League final in 2020 but faltered to Bayern Munich.
