Mumbai's Poonam chambers fire exposes non-functional fire fighting system; notice pending

Mumbai: Following a blaze at Worli’s Poonam Chambers on Sunday, an inspection was conducted by the Mumbai fire brigade on Monday, where the inbuilt firefighting system was found to be non-functional. A notice is likely to be served to the premises.
A fire officer investigating the matter said that statements of the security guards and others associated with the premises will be taken. A security guard at the premises at the time of the incident did try using the fire extinguisher, said eyewitnesses, but was unsuccessful.
A notice in such cases is served under Section 6 of the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act 2006. As per this section, it is the owners’ or occupiers’ liability to provide for fire prevention and life safety measures.
On the morning of December 15, a fire broke out around 11:39 am at the Rajashree Production Studio, spanning approximately 12,000–13,000 sq. ft., on the second floor of Worli’s Poonam Chambers. The fire occurred in the B Wing of the six-story building.
No injury was reported in the incident. The building, which houses offices and clinics, was partially empty considering most of the establishments remain shut on a Sunday afternoon.
