Police seize bus DVR to scan CCTV to gather info, identify passengers

Mumbai: City police took custody of the digital video recorder (DVR) from the out-of-control BEST bus in Kurla to scan the CCTV footage to understand the sequence of events that led up to Monday’s fatal accident. They said based on the footage, the bus’s passengers would be traced, and their statements recorded as witnesses.
A video footage inside the bus shows the passengers in a state of panic after witnessing the bus accelerate and ram into vehicles and pedestrians. Some of the passengers were heard screaming for help, and after the bus hit the Ambedkar Nagar gate and stopped, frightened passengers were seen trying to open the exit door. Later, the passengers, with the help of the conductor, broke open the window panes and jumped out. “We are in the process of identifying some of the passengers of the bus who could be our eyewitnesses to this horrific accident, and their testimony could lead to the punishment of the accused,” said an official.
Meanwhile, an RTO team that examined the accident bus is yet to give its final opinion on the possible cause behind the accident—if it was a snag in the electric bus or human error. — S Ahmed Ali
