Mumbai: The city experienced a sharp drop in minimum temperatures, falling to 14°C on Monday from 16.3°C the previous day. This marks a six-degree decline from the 20.1°C recorded on Saturday, Dec 14. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), however, indicated that minimum temperatures are likely to rise in the coming days.
While the IMD Santacruz observatory recorded minimum temperatures of 14 degrees, the Colaba observatory recorded 19.8 degrees C, which was 1.3 degrees below normal. Meanwhile, day temperatures recorded on Monday by the IMD Colaba and Santacruz observatories were 34 and 34.8 degrees, respectively. This was two degrees and 2.5 degrees below normal, respectively.
IMD scientist Sushma Nair said that a rise in temperature can be expected. “The wind pattern is expected to change, and we may witness the influence of the westerlies again. Further, maximum temperatures are expected to dip,” she said.
In its forecast for Tuesday, Dec17, the IMD said that minimum temperatures could rise to 15 degrees and further on Dec 18 to 18 degrees. “A sunny day in the city and suburbs is expected on Tuesday, while on December 18, haze during morning hours in suburbs is expected, with it becoming clear sky towards afternoon/evening in the city and suburbs,” stated the IMD in its forecast.
The city’s minimum temperatures have been fluctuating over the past many days, with December 9 marking the season’s lowest temperature of 13.7°C. The IMD said that these changes were due to varying wind patterns. The all-time lowest minimum temperature recorded for Mumbai for the month was 10.6 degrees on December 20, 1949.
