The Bada Bagh garden in Jaisalmer is exquisitely beautiful as it is mysterious. The garden with centuries-old trees has stood the test of time without being adversely affected by climate change.
Rajasthan is known for its dunes and its unique culture. From the traditional attire to the state’s folk songs, Rajasthan never stops to amaze people. Although Rajasthan has its uniqueness, the people hold greenery very dear. The Thar deserts stretch tens of thousands of miles with hardly any sign of greenery. However, Jaisalmer’s Bada Bagh tells a different story.
The Bada Bagh garden, situated in the Thar Desert, is known for its centuries-old trees. The garden is spread around 75 acres with different variety of trees. Some trees bear fruits, and some have simply existed with all their glory for centuries. With thirty-six varieties of trees, the Bada Bagh in Jaisalmer has the experts excited.
According to experts, it is a miracle that trees have stood there for centuries, and to add to that, they have not been adversely affected due to climate change or the harsh weather patterns experienced in the desert of Rajasthan.
The garden contains trees such as Neem, Babool, Jamun, Mango, Gunda, and Arjun. In addition to the old trees, the Bada Bagh also boasts fifteen varieties of grass.
An article published on Village Square mentions the following:
“But then Bada Bagh is not famous for its trees alone. It, in fact, also mothers some 15 varieties of grass – from Sewan (Lasiurus scindicus), and Dhaman (Cenchrus ciliaris) to Moorath (Brachiaria romosa or browntop millet). It also has some medicinal plants such as Turmeric.
Amplifying its fame also has been the fact that no fertiliser has ever been used in the garden. For that matter, Bada Bagh has been organic over the centuries of its surprising existence.”
While it is true that climate change has had no impact on Bada Bagh’s trees, but things are rapidly changing. Recently, one of the oldest trees in the garden died. According to experts, the tree that died possibly could not withstand the impact of the fast-changing climate change.
The royal family, the owners of the Bada bagh, requested local conservationists to help protect the garden organically.
The Village Square article mentions:
“As roses, marigolds, and jasmine bloom in full splendour, Bada Bagh echoes with the constant chirping of birds, from mynas and koyals to parrots. They collectively tell us that there exists a miracle in Thar, in the shape of the verdant Bada Bagh garden right in the middle of a desert.”
