New Delhi: Municipal Corporation of Delhi has informed National Green Tribunal about the completion of cleaning operations along a nearly 4.4 km stretch of the Yamuna floodplain near Wazirabad and Jagatpur’s Yamuna Pushta Road. This action followed a resident’s complaint about substantial municipal waste dumping along the riverbank.
The tribunal has been hearing a petition from the resident, Manish Jain, who highlighted in Aug the continuous dumping of various types of waste and construction material along Pushta Road. The petitioner alleged that previous complaints to the authorities concerned did not yield any remedial actions.
The civic body informed the tribunal that LG VK Saxena had personally inspected the area. “During the visit, LG directed all the authorities concerned, including Delhi Development Authority, MCD and irrigation & flood control department, to clean the eastern side of the Yamuna bank,” MCD stated in its Dec 5 submission.
The civic body added that the irrigation & flood control department provided labour and pokelane heavy machines for the cleaning work. However, it stated that the maintenance responsibility now lied with DDA. “..It is expected that DDA, being the land-owning agency, keeps watch over the Yamuna bank since O-Zone comes under the jurisdiction of DDA,” MCD stated.
