NEW DELHI: Delhi Police has arrested a 37-year-old mathematics graduate from Raghubir Nagar in west Delhi on charges of stealing more than 50 cellphones, officials said on Monday.
Pramod Kumar Gupta, who stands accused, earned his mathematics degree in 2013 from a government institution in Ghonda, Uttar Pradesh, according to police.
Although he received training in mobile phone repairs in 2020, police officials stated that Gupta turned to selling stolen phones across Delhi and Haryana for quick financial gains.
“A resident of Sonipat in Haryana, Gupta was previously involved in a criminal case. A total of 52 stolen or snatched mobile phones and 15 motherboards of cellphones were seized from his possession,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), Vichitra Veer, said in a statement.
Police were alerted on March 6 about an individual in Raghubir Nagar attempting to sell numerous stolen mobile phones, as stated by the DCP.
Authorities set up surveillance near NWB Chowk road, and at approximately 12:30 am on March 7, they spotted Gupta carrying a backpack containing mobile phones.
When instructed to halt by police, Gupta attempted to escape but was caught after a brief pursuit, according to the officer.
During the search, authorities discovered 52 mobile phones of different brands and 15 motherboards in Gupta’s possession, for which he failed to provide ownership documentation, the DCP reported.
“At least two of the recovered phones have bee linked to cases reported at Khyala and Hari Nagar police stations,” Veer said.
The officer mentioned that Gupta, whose father serves as a commission agent, is married with two children.
