Nupur recently took to her Twitter handle to share the headlines of one of her stories. She tweeted:-Mamata Banerjee bans -The Kerala Files part -4
“Mamata Banerjee bans ‘The Kerala Files’ to maintain ‘peace’ in Bengal weeks after she had asked Hindus to stay away from Muslim areas for ‘peace’”
The Kerala Story is the latest victim of ban or cancel culture that has gripped society like cancer. While the film is doing well in the rest of India, states like West Bengal and Tamil Nadu have gone on to ban the film in fear of disrupting “Peace.”
Humans, for millennia, have communicated their innermost feelings and emotions through art. Be it music or painting, be it literature or cinema, we best express ourselves through art. A society that bans arts is surely headed for doom.
An article published on News Nine mentions the following:
“This is what makes banning any piece of art, in this case film, problematic. The ban on ‘The Kerala Story’ in West Bengal is thus another continuation in this vilification of art and the unethical way in which governments suppress anything which they might not agree with. A dangerous practice in any free democracy.”
“In a democracy which practises free speech, it is imperative that all forms of opinions are put out in the open. That is what it means to live in a free society.
Especially in a country like India which has a lot of diverse voices it becomes all the more important that all diverse voices are given a platform and are heard. To suppress a voice and deny its platform is detrimental to the health of the democracy in the long run as well,” the article further mentions.
India, for centuries, has been a land of intellectual debates and discourse. The Vedas and the Upanishads are to be seen as debates and discourses, as opposed to mere religious texts. Curtailing free speech or expression is a direct contradiction to the Indian ethos of cultural openness.-Mamata Banerjee bans -The Kerala Files
The News Nine article mentions:
“The decision by the West Bengal government goes against this Indian ethos of debate and discourse that has existed in our country since time immemorial. The legacy of our nation’s traditions should not be trifled with just because some sections of the political establishment have their feathers ruffled by a film.”
In the next episode, we will explore why India needs more films like The Kashmir Files and The Kerala Story.-Mamata Banerjee bans -The Kerala Files part -4
