LPG Aadhaar eKYC rule: Only unauthenticated users required to complete process, clarifies government

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has clarified that biometric Aadhaar authentication (eKYC) for LPG connections is required only for customers who have not yet completed the process, and not for all consumers.

In a statement, the ministry said recent reports suggesting mandatory eKYC for all LPG users are incorrect, adding that the communication shared earlier is part of ongoing efforts to encourage completion of Aadhaar-based authentication among pending users.

It emphasised that the clarification does not introduce any new directive.

According to the ministry, eKYC applies only to LPG consumers who remain unauthenticated. Non-beneficiary customers under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) who have already completed the process are not required to repeat it.

For PMUY beneficiaries, the ministry said eKYC is required once every financial year, and only for those receiving targeted direct benefit transfer (DBT) subsidies beyond seven refills—specifically from the eighth refill onward.

The ministry added that the eKYC process can be completed from home at no cost. It also stated that LPG refill supply remains unaffected regardless of eKYC status.

Here are the steps to complete your e-KYC:

  • 1: Visit the official website.
  • 2: From the homepage, download the mobile app of the oil company (Indane, Bharat Gas or HP Gas)
  • 3: Download the Aadhaar FaceRD app.
  • 4: Follow all the instructions given on the respective app of the oil company and scan your face via the Aadhaar FaceRD app to complete the e-KYC process.

The clarification noted that Aadhaar-based authentication helps improve transparency, establish eligibility, and curb duplicate or inactive connections in the LPG distribution system.
