Law School Review: LJD Law College, Falta

Amrit Bhattacharjee

LJD Law College, Falta (Tollygunge Campus), Kolkata, West Bengal

Metro City Park, Nepalgange Julpia Rd, Nepalgange, Raghabpur, West Bengal 700103

There are two campuses of LJD, Tollygunge and Falta. For both campuses, all rooms are fully furnished with AC. For Tollygunge Campus, classrooms are 5/5 with projectors.

The library isn’t that big in Tollygunge but has SCC/Manupatra access (no devices), so 4/5.

Sports exposure is less; however, we do have a small field along with a basketball court, which is concrete laid. 3/5 for sports, however 5/5 for Falta Campus.

Hostel rooms—none; PGs are available in Nepalgunge, Raghabpur, Tollygunge. 5/5 for Falta Campus, which has a hostel.

We do have moot court rooms in both campuses, which are 5/5. Tollygunge lacks a seminar room, but Falta has a stunning 5/5 hall for orientation, events, and workshops.

Tollygunge Campus has car parking and a transport facility, which is 4/5 considering the distance from Tollygunge metro.

  • Tollygunge Campus: 4.2/5
  • Falta Campus: 5/5

There are a dozen faculty members apt with the necessary teaching skills, and the professors are both friendly and great mentors once you reach out to them.

The faculty has been the best for the batches that have gone through. Attendance is indeed mandatory, with BCI’s 75% attendance criteria for students, and it is updated via CMS by the teachers. The class lectures are about 45 minutes, with moments of break and laughter in between.

The college is relatively new, but the alumni, and if you’re good with networking, seniors and batchmates are always there. Bittersweet experience for me, but I found everyone to be supportive in the end.

Rating: 4/5

We have an inter-semester moot court competition annually and have managed to form unofficial clubs for photography, sports, music, and competitions. No fests, but there is an orientation. Social life is not that bad if you can connect in and around Tollygunge. Falta is even more isolated, however, it has a warm hostel culture.

We have a firm of our own. Internships are pursued by individuals as they please, and faculty will guide you on that. Seniors of your jurisdiction are helpful. Most students here choose litigation, and a few opt for CS/CLO.

The college admin has good connectivity with and on maritime laws, as there is a marine college under the same LJD group. There is no placement cell whatsoever; however, final semester students are taken and advised on regular court visits.

None for Tollygunge. Falta has a good hostel with a fair amount of vacancy. Mess food and a canteen are both available.

The college atmosphere is relatively remote, with serene views and beautiful scenery in the rain. The batchmates I encountered were enthusiastic and always inspiring to me. Professors, friends, and the library/canteen make the college memorable.

It is a challenge to establish oneself in the field of litigation, let alone get exposure to other fields of law from remote law colleges without much exposure.

However, affiliation with the University of Calcutta entails benefits like the reading room facility at the Main Library and the Law Library of Calcutta University, at College Street and Hazra, respectively.

If you want to visit our firm, do check out LJD LLP Associates at Nicco House, near the Calcutta High Court.
