NEW DELHI: The bus driver involved in the BEST bus accident on December 9 in Kurla, Mumbai, was neither drunk nor mentally ill, according to medical test results released on Wednesday.
Eight people died and over 40 were injured when the electric bus, driven by 54-year-old Sanjay More, plowed into a crowd and several vehicles.
More is currently in police custody, charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder for reckless driving.
A psychological evaluation conducted at a Sion civic hospital showed More has no mental illness or brain-related disease.
Blood tests also confirmed he was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
More claimed the crash was caused by brake failure. However, a report from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) concluded the bus had no mechanical problems.
BEST administration has claimed More received three days’ training before he was allowed to drive the electric bus.
The RTO suspects human error and inadequate training on automatic transmission buses may be factors in the accident.
