K’taka to upgrade Adarsha Vidyalayas with PU classes

Bengaluru: The state govt has decided to upgrade Adarsha Vidyalayas in Karnataka with PU classes. Seventy-four Adarsha Vidyalayas will get science and commerce streams from the next academic year.
Adarsha Vidyalayas are govt-run schools that aim to provide quality education in rural areas by identifying best students through entrance exams for class 6. The schools are in high demand due to the sound infrastructure and quality education.
The main expenditure for the govt will be in recruiting teachers and building labs for physics, chemistry, biology and computer science. According to the estimates, each lab will cost around Rs 10 lakh. The total cost of building four labs in 74 schools would amount to Rs 37.6 crore.
If the school appoints guest faculty for nine posts, the expected estimate would be Rs 8 crore, while it could be Rs 63 crore in the case of permanent faculty. Each school will be given Rs 1 crore for the upgradation activities. “Although the students in Adarsha Vidyalayas are capable of learning, they are deprived of opportunities to enrol in well-equipped colleges due to financial problems. In this context, it is important to upgrade the schools so that students who are interested and have good learning ability locally will be able to enrol,” said the circular.
