Konark Wheel Grabbed Attention in the Backdrop of G-20 Summit: All about its History and Significance

A replica of the Konark Wheel of the heritage Sun Temple in Odisha was displayed in the background as PM Modi shook hands with the global leaders at the G-20 Summit. Its captivating beauty as well as scientific precision was unmissable.

PM Modi on Saturday greeted some of the most powerful world leaders at the G-20 Summit held at the Bharat Mandapam International Exhibition-Convention Centre. Something that was unmissable on the grand stage was the replica of the historic Konark Wheel of the Sun Temple in the background. PM Modi was also seen personally explaining its significant value to the US President Biden who seemed awe-struck by the beauty of the Wheel.

So let us discuss the Konark Sun Temple the national and cultural significance of the Konark Wheel and its importance of being showcased in the G-20 Summit.

The Konark Sun Temple is a renowned pilgrimage site that earned a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation in 1984. Located in Odisha, approximately 35 kilometers away from Puri, the Konark Wheel showcased at the G20 Summit is an inseparable part of the Konark Sun Temple.

The Odisha Tourism website describes the temple as the result of seven centuries of hard work in the pursuit of excellence. King Narasimha Deva I built it in the 12th century to honor the Sun God. The temple boasts a massive structure, precise symmetry, and intricate artwork that never fails to impress visitors.

The Sun Temple’s form and design remain authentic through the surviving buildings, their placement within the complex, and the sculptures’ integral link to the architecture. Everything about the temple, including its structures, sculptures, ornamentation, and narratives, has been preserved in its original forms and materials. The temple’s setting and location near the Bay of Bengal have also been maintained in their original form. By preserving the temple’s attributes, the spirit and feeling associated with the structure continue to be evoked and are still present today in cultural practices such as the Chandrabhaga festival.

Tourists visiting the temple often seek out the Konark Wheel, also known as the Konark Chakra, as a souvenir. The 24-spoke wheel symbolizes timeless knowledge, advanced civilization, and remarkable architecture. The wheels are crafted in such a manner that one can make out the time of the day by looking at the shadow cast by the sun on the Wheel. It’s included in India’s national flag and represents the circular motion of time or Kalachakra, as well as the development and evolution of the cosmos. Additionally, the wheel of democracy embodies the persistence of democratic values and dedication to social progress.

The iconic structure showcased on an International platform highlights the importance of preserving and rejoicing in the national treasure and also assures that future generations in India as well as all over the world get inspired and learn about India’s rich cultural heritage and scientific caliber.
