Mumbai: The police have identified four more children sold to families in three states by a gang. They made a tenth arrest in the case, allegedly a key middleman.
The police issued notices to the four parents who purchased these children from the gang. These four parents are from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Vadodara, Thane, and Karnataka.
They said the latest person arrested, Abdul Karim Nadaf, was a key member of the gang.
“Nadaf is the key main accused who runs a footwear shop, and he acted as a middleman in the racket. The money trail suggests that the gang sold the babies for anywhere between Rs 2 lakh and 4 lakh, and the major commission went to Nadaf,” DCP (zone 4) R Ragasudha said.
On Monday, the police had arrested nine people, including eight women, in a child trafficking case spread across the city, Gujarat and Karnataka. A four-month-old girl, sold for Rs 5 lakh to a couple in Karwar, Karnataka, was rescued.
Sandhya Rajput, who bought the baby, was also made an accused in the case. The police suspect the involvement of a gynaecologist and a nurse from Karnataka and anticipate their arrest soon.
The police said the baby was sold by its mother, Manisha Yadav,who told them that she had done it for money to bail out her husband, who was arrested in a theft case.
“Our teams have gone to various places to trace the parents who bought these four babies from this gang. We will give them notices, take custody of the child, and make them accused in the case,” inspector Rajendra Pawar said.
The nine previously arrested people were Sulochana Kamble (45), Mira Yadav (40), Yogesh Bhoir (37), Roshni Ghosh (34), Sandhya Rajput (48), Madina alias Munni Chavan (44), Tainaaz Chauhan (19), Baby Tamboli (50), and Manisha Yadav (32). The accused hailed from Dadar an Sewri in the city, Diva, Vadodara and Karwar and were employed as marriage bureau workers, caregivers and hospital aides.
The case came to light on Dec 11 when the infant’s grandmother, living on Sion-Mahim Link Road, lodged a complaint at the Matunga police station. She reported that her daughter-in-law, Manisha Yadav, had sold her four-month-old baby. Upon interrogation, Manisha Yadav confessed to selling the child to a couple in Karnataka for Rs 1 lakh with the help of intermediaries Madina Chavan and Tainaaz Chauhan from Vadodara.
