The Kerala High Court today held a Full Court reference to express condolences for the loss of lives and to show support to the survivors of the landslides in Wayanad, which affected the areas of Mundakkai and Choormala. The death toll from the disaster is nearing 300, with several persons still missing.

The Acting Chief Justice A. Muhamed Mustaque expressed his collective solidarity and unwavering support with the victims and survivors of Wayanad landslide that took place in the wee hours of July 30, 2024.

“Today as we pay homage to the victims we acknowledge the unfathomed loss experienced by their families and friends. Each life loss represents a unique story, a beloved member of a family, a cherished friend and a vital being out to the community.”

Justice Mustaque praised the bravery and determination of both the people and rescue workers who faced the disaster. “…the rescue workers which include the entire rescue machinery of the state government, military officials and other rescue workers of the Central Government, medical professionals, volunteers and local authorities who worked tirelessly in the face of adversity and showed the best of humanity.”

Justice Mustaque reminded all that our tribute to the victims and survivors must go beyond words and it must reflect in our actions and policies to make positive changes. “May we all find the strength to heal, the wisdom to learn and determination to build a better and safe future.

Advocate General Gopalakrishna Kurup K mentioned that the death toll has reached 299 and spoke about the enormity of the catastrophe that has affected Wayanad. AG commented on the gallant efforts taken by the State government, Central government and everyone who supported the rescue mission. “As is always in crises, Kerala in unison rushed to help their brothers in distress..”

AG reminded that Kerala has overcome many such disasters in the last few years like the floods in 2018, 2019 and the Covid-19 Pandemics. (Kerala High Court on landslides in Wayanad)

“I whole heartedly salute the selfless service of all those who are tirelessly engaged in the rescue mission, I join the grief of those in the relief camps and those who have lost tehir near and dear ones. I pay homage to those who lost their lives in the disaster.”

Vice President of Kerala High Court Advocates’ Association, Advocate K K Unni stated that the Wayanad disaster must be an eye opener to all of us to protect and bring balance to the environment to avoid such mishaps in the future.
