Kalki Koechlin reveals facing difficulties in renting a home after divorce from Anurag Kashyap: “Living as a single person was anyway difficult”

Actor Kalki Koechlin, known for her roles in films like ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ and ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani‘, faced significant challenges in finding a rental home in Mumbai after her divorce from filmmaker Anurag Kashyap in 2015.
In a recent interview on the YouTube channel After Hours with All About Eve, she shared her experiences of searching for a place to live as a single woman in the city. Despite her fame, Kalki encountered numerous obstacles during her house-hunting journey. She expressed frustration, stating, “I am famous. You want to take selfies with me, but you don’t want to give me a house.”

Kalki’s struggles were not just about being a celebrity, they were compounded by societal perceptions of single women. She noted that after her separation from Anurag, she moved three times within six months due to difficulties in securing rental agreements. “I think it didn’t help that I was a celebrity—people knew about me, they had these pre-conceived notions of me, and living as a single person was anyway difficult”

Interestingly, Anurag Kashyap later revealed that the house he currently resides in was originally found by Kalki. In an interview with Pinkvilla, he had mentioned, “This was the house we moved into when I got married. Kalki had found this house”.
After enduring this ordeal, Kalki eventually managed to purchase her own apartment in Mumbai’s Versova. She recounted that when she first visited her new home, it was just her and the grandmother of the family who owned it. They communicated in Tamil, which made the encounter pleasant and helped solidify her connection to the place: “I spoke to her in Tamil; she was so happy that she later made me filter coffee”

On the work front, Kalki has continued to thrive. She was last seen in the film ‘Goldfish’, which explores a mother’s battle with dementia and her relationship with her daughter. Her upcoming projects include ‘Her Story’ and ‘Nesippaya’. Meanwhile, Anurag Kashyap is busy working on the second part of his film previously titled ‘Nishanchi’ in Lucknow.
