Israel Seeks to Hire One Lakh Indian Workers to Replace Palestinians Amidst War
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has initiated communication with his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, for India’s unwavering support for Israel amidst the crisis. The Prime Minister has expressed solidarity and discussed combining to combat terrorism. India’s support for Israel has been evident and historical.
“We hope to engage some 50,000 to 100,000 workers from India to work across the sector and bring it to normalcy”, member of the Israeli Builder Association.
The recent conflict between Israel and Hamas has had a significant impact on the labor market in Israel. Due to the shortage of workers, the Israeli government is now actively seeking skilled workers from India to fill the gap. This move will increase the number of Indian workers in Israel, increasing remittances sent to India. As a result, the financial well-being of Indian employees will improve significantly, providing a much-needed boost to their overall economic stability.
“We are at war and the Palestinian workers, which are about 25 per cent of our human resources in the sector, are not coming, are not permitted to work in Israel.”
Haim Feiglin, the vice president of the Israel Builders Association, “Right now we are negotiating with India,” the Voice of America quoted.
Israel and India have had a long-standing partnership, with India showing support for Israel. However, due to a ban preventing almost 25 percent of the Palestinian labor force from working in Israel, there is a shortage of workers. To address this issue, Israel is currently in talks with the Indian government to replace the Palestinian workers with Indian laborers.
In May this year, the government of India signed a bilateral agreement with Israel to facilitate the migration of approximately 42,000 Indian workers to Israel. Among these, 34,000 intended to work in the construction sector, while 8,000 were designated as nurses. However, after the uncertain attacks in the region, the Indian government launched “Operation Ajay” and promptly evacuated all stranded Indian citizens amidst the ongoing war. In response to the crisis, S. Jaishankar, Foreign Minister, stated, “Special charter flights and other arrangements are being put in place. We are fully committed to the safety and well-being of our nationals abroad.”
The Indo-Israeli relationship has been strengthened significantly through trade over the years, with India emerging as a major importer of Israeli defense goods. The relationship between the leaders of both nations has played a crucial role in reinforcing bilateral ties, as evident from Prime Minister Modi’s historic visit to Israel in 2017, which marked the first-ever visit by an Indian head of state to Israel.
