IPS trainee faces assault probe after wedding violence

New Delhi: An IPS trainee is under investigation following his alleged involvement in violence at a wedding in southwest Delhi’s Kapashera where he is suspected to have hit a guest on the head with a glass tumbler.
The 2023 batch IPS trainee and the wedding guest who suffered injuries have filed complaints against each other. Police said both are being looked into.
The incident was partially captured in CCTV footage.
According to police sources, the incident came to light when a distress call went to Kapashera police station on Dec 6, reporting an assault by a known person. Then, a hospital in Gurgaon informed police about treating the victim, who later left against medical advice.
“We got initial information through a PCR call, followed by a medico-legal case from the hospital,” said a senior police officer. The victim’s injuries were classified as “simple” in the medical report, prompting police action under Section 115 (voluntarily causing hurt to another person) of BNS, the officer said.
The victim’s complaint said that the IPS trainee struck him on the head with a whiskey glass during an argument, resulting in injuries.
CCTV footage shows a purported altercation. However, a senior police officer said the footage was not entirely clear, and they were working to verify its authenticity and establish the sequence of events.
“We are thoroughly investigating the claims,” the officer said.
An officer also said that an old rivalry between the two, who were preparing for civil services together, seems to be the source of the trouble. The officer said the trainee claimed that because of being unable to clear the exam, the victim was bothering him for some time and levelled allegations against him.
