On day one, I saw everyone in a rush. One ma’am told us to wait for sir; after a brief introduction, our task would be given. But no such formal introduction happened. From 10 am to 3 pm, we were sitting there waiting and observing the work.

Then the same ma’am came again, asked us about our preferences, and gave us our first task, which was a joint task of making a PPT with a co-intern.

Right after that task was given, another senior came with a huge file, asking me to make notes of it. Another task was given after that, which was translating a document from English to a native language.

I understood the hectic work culture that day.

My first impression was that the seniors were friendly and the office was huge, but there was no structured way of work for interns, as they gave us tasks at around 4 pm while our shift was supposed to be 10 am–5 pm.

We had to stay extra on the first day itself, not because of hectic work but because of a lack of planning.

  • Finding loopholes in debt assignment agreements.
  • Drafting title search report.
  • Researching relevant case laws.
  • Making notes from brief.
  • Observing the court proceedings.
  • Serving copy to public prosecutor and ministery of law.
  • Transcripting certified copies.
  • Translating bengali documents to english.

The work environment was healthy. Everyone was very friendly and extremely patient with the interns. They used to explain every task properly and encourage us to ask questions whenever we had a doubt.

The work was diverse, so one was exposed to various disciplines other than the generic one. It was not just reading and observing; there was actual work for the interns. I did not feel like I was wasting my time at all during the tenure of the internship.

There was no structured work for the interns; I was either getting work from everyone at the same time or nothing at all. However, this situation started to improve after two weeks.

And the rigid office timings, even if there was no work, you still had to stay until 5 pm. For me, this was a bit irritating. There was no scope for a stipend unless you were in your final year and a long-term intern.

Also, you couldn’t just go out; like in school, you had to ask first, which was also quite ridiculous, as you were not just a student, you were working there.

NA

Well, I used to travel from my home by train and then by bus. On some days, I used to take a ferry ride instead of the bus. It took me around 1.5–2 hours to reach the office.

My internship at R Singh and Associates provided exposure to a diverse and hands-on legal work culture, allowing me to understand how different areas of law intersect in practice.

I learned to approach legal documents critically by identifying inconsistencies and loopholes and to apply case law strategically rather than mechanically.

The experience enhanced my drafting accuracy, research depth, and ability to comprehend briefs efficiently.

I also gained insight into procedural compliance and court functioning, which strengthened my understanding of litigation practice.

Most importantly, the internship emphasized accountability, time management, and professional responsibility, making the learning process practical, engaging, and highly productive throughout the tenure.
