Internship Experience @ Chambers of Senior Adv. Ravi Shankar Sharma

Bhumika Kathuria

Vivekananda Institute of Professional Studies, Pitampura, Delhi

Under Senior Advocate Ravi Shankar Sharma, Veerangana Bhawan, Chamber No. 14, Collectorate Compound, District Court, Jhansi, UP.

June 1, 2024- June 31, 2024

I requested Sir that I am interested in interning under him, as he is one of the most reputed and senior-most advocates in Jhansi.

So, the first day started with a small interview-like session, where Sir asked me a few questions related to law to check my knowledge, and the concepts were really the basic important ones. Then, I was introduced to the entire staff.

Talking about the infrastructure, the office of Sir was in the lawyers’ chamber, and it was a small office surrounded by case files and books, and there were seats available for clients. The first impression of Sir was that he, being one of the senior-most advocates, had an amazing depth of knowledge.

He has been in practice for more than 30 years, and he talked to me, telling me the importance of bare act texts. Overall, it was a very enlightening and introductory session.

The main tasks included creating case briefs and doing legal research on cases along with relevant provisions research.

The place where I was reporting was the chamber of Sir in the district of Jhansi. The vibe was, no doubt, entirely legal, so there was no such distraction; I felt like I had stepped into a legal world. It was pretty engaging, as I witnessed not only the trials but also the communication between the counsel and the client.

It was an encouraging work environment, as I realised that I was not the only intern; some were of my age, some were older, and everyone was trying to understand the legal procedure. So, the spirit of the working environment was filled with enthusiasm.

The good things about the internship included:

That I had closely observed all sorts of interactions, be it in the court or with the client in private.

Secondly, the depth of the knowledge which my senior had was like a teacher-student relationship, whereby he explained to me the applicability of sections and what other sections that particular section or provision attracts.

I had the privilege of filing documents, form writing applications, and submitting vakalatnama in court.

The bad thing about my internship was nothing as such. I had a pretty good experience interning there, and the basic rule about doing legal internships is that things do not happen according to you; they happen according to the procedure and rules, which have been very clearly laid down.

No, Stipend.

The District Court of Jhansi was situated within 1 km from my residence, and thus, the commute to the office was quite easy and less time-consuming.

It is not like we were constantly surrounded by a heavy workload; we shared quite a few light moments, sharing experiences from work which were light-hearted and mood-uplifting. Sometimes, we used to eat from the local shops together, which was really enjoyable as well.

Other than that, I learned that I personally realised the importance of law, as no matter what the issue is, only lawyers can help you in dealing with it in the right and lawful way.
