First-Day Formalities, Infrastructure, and First Impression

From the very first day at the chamber of Adv. Deep Kumar Mohanty, I was struck by the chamber’s highly disciplined and structured working environment.

The warmth, guidance, and professionalism of sir immediately made me feel welcomed, and I knew I was entering a space where learning would be both serious and meaningful.

Sir consistently guided me, clarified my doubts, and encouraged me to approach legal work with clarity, responsibility, and confidence. He also helped me personally by suggesting nearby PGs to stay in during the tenure of the internship.

Main Tasks

I assisted in drafting an anticipatory bail petition under Section 482 of the BNSS, 2023; a Contempt Petition under Article 215 of the Constitution of India, 1950, read with Sections 11 and 12 of the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971; and a Restoration Petition under Rule 30 of Chapter VIII of the Orissa High Court Rules, 1948, read with Section 151 of CPC.

I also worked on a Mutual Divorce Agreement under Section 13B of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955; a Criminal Miscellaneous Petition (Criminal Writ Petition) under Articles 226 and 227 of the Constitution of India; and a legal notice.

Additionally, I assisted in drafting a Rent Agreement, an Interim Application under Rule 27(a) of Chapter VI of the Orissa High Court Rules, 1948, and a representation draft to government authorities in a service matter.

I assisted in legal research of provisions and judgments relating to assigned cases across Constitutional, Criminal, Civil, and Contractual laws.

I attended client counselling sessions and discussed case matters with sir, while also learning the filing of Vakalatnama and the procedure for filing cases.

I visited various sections of the Orissa High Court, including the filing, stamp reporting, defect removal, and listing sections.

I learnt to use the Orissa High Court website to check cause lists, case status, and display boards. I observed final arguments and understood courtroom etiquette at the Orissa High Court. I also visited the Orissa High Court Mediation Centre as part of my practical exposure.

Work Environment

The work environment at the Chambers of Adv. Deep Kumar Mohanty is both disciplined and deeply encouraging for learning. From the first day, I observed a structured workflow where every file, draft, and case note was maintained with clarity and precision.

The chamber combines professionalism with approachability. Deep Sir is always willing to guide, clarify doubts, and ensure interns understand the practical reasoning behind every task.

The atmosphere is calm yet productive, with a strong focus on quality drafting, research, and timely work. Discussions on legal strategies, case analysis, and courtroom preparation take place regularly, allowing interns to learn and participate actively.

The environment promotes responsibility and independent thinking, which makes the learning experience enriching. Overall, the chamber provides a balanced space where interns feel motivated, supported, and challenged to grow as aspiring lawyers.

It is a truly conducive environment for gaining real litigation exposure.

Good Things about the Internship

One of the best aspects was the hands-on exposure to real litigation work, including drafting bail petitions, preparing applications, and assisting in legal research.

The opportunity to observe mediation proceedings and attend hearings at the Odisha High Court added immense practical clarity and strengthened my understanding of court procedure and advocacy.

Another good thing was the chamber’s approachable, supportive guidance. Sir sometimes explained concepts patiently, corrected drafts with clarity, and ensured I understood both the legal reasoning and practical strategy behind each task.

The work environment encouraged discipline, responsibility, and learning by doing, which made each day productive.

Bad Things about the Internship

While the internship at the Chambers of Adv. Deep Kumar Mohanty was highly enriching; there were a few areas that could be improved.

At times, the workload became unpredictable, with certain days being extremely hectic while others were comparatively slower, making time management a little challenging. Occasionally, tasks required urgent completion, which could feel overwhelming for interns still adapting to the pace of litigation.

Because the environment is fast-paced, there were moments when detailed feedback on drafts wasn’t always possible, and I had to learn through observation rather than direct explanation.

Additionally, exposure to certain types of matters depended on the court schedule, so not every intern got equal attention.

These aspects, however, are natural in a litigation setting and ultimately contributed to building adaptability, patience, and a stronger understanding of real courtroom practice.

No accommodation will be provided by the office, but there are many student PGs near the chamber’s location. In fact, Sir helped me personally by suggesting safe PGs and sharing their contact details.

Anything else you want to share?

At the end of the internship, I also got the opportunity to be treated by Sir, and we went out for lunch. Overall, my first litigation internship experience was very overwhelming.
