Indigenous Production of Reference Fuel Makes India Self-Sufficient

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has successfully developed a premium quality testing oil for automobile testing. The product will replace imports and provide a reliable supply at a much lower cost to vehicle manufacturers and testing agencies. The development of this indigenous product is a significant achievement for the Indian oil industry and is expected to contribute to the growth of the automobile sector in the country.

India has taken a significant step towards self-sufficiency in producing reference fuel petrol and diesel. There are only three global suppliers of reference fuel. However, Indian Oil’s Panipat and Odisha Refineries have now joined this elite group, which will significantly reduce India’s dependency on imports. With the indigenous production of reference fuel, India can now conduct emission testing of automobiles and position itself as a global automobile industry.

Hardeep Singh Puri, Petroleum and Gas Minister, during the launch of Reference Fuel, said, “Our indigenous technical prowess” is another step towards the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat”.

Puri also highlighted including the E20 fuel mix by 2025 for reducing carbon emissions and that almost 5000 petrol pumps have already included E20 petrol. “I am told the target of 12 percent ethanol mixing has been achieved this month, and we are on track for the 20 percent goal by the end of 2025 calendar year,” Puri said.

“Make in India” has successfully made another move in making India count in the elite group of producers of high-caliber oil. The home-based production of the reference fuel will not only enable India to reduce its dependency on imports but also reduce the cost. Reference fuel is almost ten times the cost of the regular fuel, i.e., it is about Rs 800-850 a liter compared to 90-96 for the regular fuel. Domestic fuel production will cut down a considerable cost, which will come to about 450/liter.

Until now, India had to rely on imports to fulfill the demand for reference fuels. The production of reference fuels requires higher specifications, which are crucial in calibrating and testing automobiles. These fuels are used by automobile industries and testing agencies such as the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) and the Automotive Research Association of India.

The minister also spoke about other policies the government has undertaken to neutralize carbon emissions and make India “energy-independent” by 2047. India is also looking forward to diversifying the energy supply through different sources, and it is also expected that India will start exporting such crucial commodities shortly.
