A Brief Introduction
The Indian Law Institute (ILI), New Delhi, is an autonomous body registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, and enjoys significant academic independence and institutional autonomy to pursue its objectives. Over the years, the Institute has built a strong academic community, with a membership of nearly three thousand individuals committed to the study, development, and advancement of law.
The governance structure of the Institute reflects its national importance. The Chief Justice of India serves as the ex-officio President, while the Union Minister for Law and Justice acts as the Vice-President. The Governing Council comprises eminent legal luminaries, including Judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts, the Attorney General for India, the Solicitor General, the Chairman of the Law Commission, representatives from the University Grants Commission, and distinguished academicians and legal practitioners.
In recognition of its contribution to legal education and research, the Institute was granted Deemed-to-be University status in 2004 by the Government of India.
The primary objectives of the Institute include promoting advanced legal education and research, developing and systematising the law, and encouraging interdisciplinary legal studies. It also aims to improve the quality of legal education, undertake research in law and allied fields, and contribute to legal scholarship through publications such as books, journals, and periodicals. The Institute continues to play a vital role in aligning legal research with the evolving social and economic needs of society.

Director name: Senior Professor (Dr.) V. K. Ahuja
Background: He holds a Ph.D. and LL.M. from the University of Delhi and an M.Phil. from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He has also completed a certificate course in Law Teaching and Legal Research Skills from Cardiff Law School, Cardiff University, United Kingdom.
Before joining as Director of the Indian Law Institute, he served as Vice-Chancellor of the National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam, from 2021 to 2024. With around 30 years of teaching and research experience at the postgraduate level, he has held several important academic positions at the University of Delhi.
He has also been recognised for his academic contributions, including winning the first prize at the Fifth South Asian Teaching Session on International Humanitarian Law and Refugee Law in 2003.
Message/Philosophy: He emphasises participative learning by promoting national and international seminars, conferences, colloquiums, and workshops on diverse legal issues. His vision reflects a continuous commitment to transforming legal education and research in alignment with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
