An Indian British has been found guilty of brutally killing his 76-year-old mother in the United Kingdom’s Leicester and sentenced to life in prison.
Sindeep Singh will need to serve a minimum of 31 years before he can be considered for release.
According to the Leicester police, the team received a call about the discovery of a body later identified as Bhajan Kaur, in Bolsover Street, Leicester. The deceased was found with significant injuries to her head and face.
How police solve case?
On May 13, 2024, emergency services received an alert regarding a body discovered at a property on Bolsover Street, Leicester.
Upon arrival, law enforcement officers noticed a large excavated hole in the property’s back garden.
Witness statements collected by officers indicated that Kaur’s son had been observed departing the premises shortly before the police were contacted.
Local officers apprehended 48-year-old Sindeep Singh shortly afterwards. He initially provided incorrect identification details, but subsequent verification confirmed his true identity. Upon his arrest for suspected murder, Singh denied any involvement in the incident.
Investigators discovered that Singh believed he was the rightful inheritor of the family residence from his deceased father, which had caused significant family disputes.
The court was informed that Kaur had previously reported Singh’s conduct, resulting in his arrest for suspected controlling and coercive behaviour, after which he was released on bail pending investigation.
Evidence showed Singh had been residing in his vehicle on the property’s driveway, and Kaur had permitted him entry to the house on the incident day.
Surveillance footage documented Singh’s subsequent visit to a local shop to purchase a sack barrow and spade, before returning to the Bolsover Street residence. Family members discovered Mrs Kaur’s body after failing to contact her.
Following a 16-day trial at Leicester Crown Court, Singh was convicted of murder and received a life sentence with a minimum term of 31 years before parole consideration.
What detective chief inspector Mark Sinski said?
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Sinski from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit Murder Investigation Team, said: “This was a deeply disturbing case which uncovered the lengths Singh went to, to cover his tracks.
“After killing his mother Singh went out and bought a sack barrow and spade to dig up the garden – he intended burying Kaur’s body but was disturbed before he could do that. The house had been cleaned and there was a very strong smell of disinfectant. There was clear evidence showing the planning after her death.”
“When he was approached by officers, he provided false details and had no qualms about misleading them. This has been an extremely distressing and challenging time for Kaur’s family, they have been left devastated at the loss of their dear mother. They have shown immense courage and dignity throughout the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings,” he said.
Describing the case as “unfortunate,” Sinski noted that Kaur’s family faces the difficult reality of losing a loved one at the hands of a family member.
