How did India prepare to Tackle Shaheen Afridi in the Ongoing Asia Cup?

After Sheheen Afridi devastated the Indian batting lineup the first time they met in the rain-washed match, Rohit Sharma and his team worked hard to meet the challenge in the Super Four stage.

The focus of attention ahead of the India-Pakistan match that took two days to complete was two specialists, Nuwan Seneviratne and Hari Prasad Mohan. While Prasad is a data analyst Seneviratne is the team’s throwdown specialist. The two together addressed India’s weak link: the left-arm pacer from Pakistan Shaheen Afridi.

Seneviratne used the ball-slinging tool to “curve in the in-swingers and away-shapers.” Prasad on the other hand recorded the batters’ technique to understand the areas the players could improve.

All the hard work put in by the two specialists paid off as the Indian batters put on a massive total of 356 runs, too many for the Pakistani batters to complete.

An article published on Indian Express mentioned the following:

“…Once their focus on Seneviratne ended after their stint, Shubman Gill; Shreyas Iyer; KL Rahul, in for his first training session with the team since recovering from injury, and the rest would hunch over to deep-dive into the videos. Was the front feet coming too far across or stuck too back and hence playing away from the body – and such concerns that has been plaguing India, not just against Shaheen but across left-arm swingers around the world.”

The second match versus Pakistan started with both openers scoring half-centuries. Virat Kohli and K.L. Rahul kept up with the score rate the next day and both scored a century a piece, taking the Indian total to a massive 356 runs.

Shaheen had troubled the Indian batters on previous occasions as well; however, Prasad and Seneviratne changed the mental makeup of the top-order batters who went berserk on the pitch.

The Indian Express article mentions:

“Having troubled India earlier in the T20 Asia Cup and T20 World Cup, Shaheen Shah Afridi once again caused all sorts of problems for India’s top-order in Pallekele. Come World Cup, apart from Afridi, India will face Trent Boult (NZ), Mitchell Starc (Australia), Reece Topley, David Willey (England), Marco Jansen (SA), Mustafizur Rahim (Bangladesh) and all of them capable of bringing the ball back into the right-hander.”
