Schools and colleges in non-border areas of Jammu and Kashmir reopened on Tuesday, May 13, in early signs of a return to normal life after being closed for many days due to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. However, educational institutions in the border areas will remain shut as a precautionary measure.

The official account of the Information and Public Relations Department, J&K, wrote on X, “The Government has decided to re-open schools and colleges in all non-border districts of Jammu as well as Kashmir divisions from tomorrow, 13th of May, 2025.”

Civilian flights from Srinagar airport will also resume today after remaining cancelled for almost a week, official sources told The Times of India. The Haj flights will resume from Srinagar on Wednesday.

J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited Poonch district on Sunday to meet with the families who lost their loved ones in the Pakistani shelling. He outlined the importance of future preparedness, saying, “May we never face such a situation again, but if we do, we must be better prepared.”

In a post on X, J&K Education Minister Sakina Itoo said, “All schools and colleges will reopen from May 13 in non-border districts of Jammu as well as Kashmir.”

In Punjab, all schools and colleges will remain closed on May 13 in the districts of Amritsar and Ferozepur. According to IANS, Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar, Sakshi Soni, has issued orders to close all educational institutions in Amritsar on Tuesday.

“All schools will remain closed for the next 48 hours in the District of Ferozpur. The situation is currently peaceful. Stay calm and stay alert to the messages from the district administration,” said DC Ferozepur.

Earlier on May 11, the District Administration stated that teachers can take online classes.

Additionally, schools remained closed in Pathankot, Fazilka and Tarn Taran while those in Gurdaspur, Sangrur and Barnala reopened on Tuesday.
