The agricultural sector is the largest employer of skilled and unskilled labor in the country. In this episode, we will explore how the agricultural sector has turned into the backbone of India.

With just 4 percent of the world’s water resources and 46 soil types, India has been able to feed the mouths of its people for decades.

Not only does India feed its people, but it also exports agricultural produce to different countries. But how has India been able to achieve these amazing feet? We will try to find an answer to that question in the next few minutes.

India is the seventh largest country and is blessed with fertile land. Of the 60 soil types, India can boast about having 46. The country uses over 50 percent of its landmass for agricultural purposes, making the country one of the top nations to use the land for farming.

Despite having only 4 percent of the world’s water resources, the country supports 17.8 percent of the world’s population. An article published on India Brand Equity Foundation mentions the following:

“…With only 4% of the world’s water resources and 2.4% of the world’s land, India supports 17.8% of the world’s population and 15% of the livestock population. There is no other country with a more varied food and non-food agriculture base than India, which raises the prospect of India becoming a world agricultural trade leader.”

In recent years, the agricultural sector in India has performed phenomenally. Although there are several problems and roadblocks that the framers of the country have to face, the sector continues to boom.

Between 2017-18 and 2021-22, the compound annual growth rate of the agricultural sector had been 3.7 percent. The India Brand Equity Foundation article mentions:

“In 2021-22, the estimated real agriculture gross value added (GVA) was Rs. 21.1 lakh crore (US$ 256.4 billion), accounting for 15.5% of total GVA and 6.4% higher than the pre-pandemic level. Even during the pandemic, the agriculture GVA increased for all products, including foodgrains, cereals, pulses and oilseeds, providing the country with the much-needed food security.”

While other sectors, such as handloom and handicrafts, are creating new records every year, agriculture remains unbeaten by far.
