A sportsman’s life is dedicated to his nation and his team. However, when life throws a knockout punch his sportsman spirit comes to the forefront.

Chicago White Sox pitcher Liam Hendriks is the latest addition to the long list of players who have battled cancer and got back to the playing field. This episode is dedicated to cancer survivors who have inspired the world in many ways than one.

Fox Sports shared a heartfelt tweet after the pitcher made it back to the field. The tweet read:

“Less than 5 months after being diagnosed with cancer, Liam Hendriks is back on the mound for the White Sox”

Hendriks was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in December. After being treated for the disease, the pitcher made it back to the playing field. Hendriks said, “Yeah, it was great being back out there… Getting back, putting cleats on, running out, doing all that. I felt good, I felt strong, I felt comfortable out there.”

Another cricketing giant who survived cancer and made it back to the 22 yards was none other than the gifted Yuvraj Singh. After a long battle with cancer, Yuvraj got back into the Indian squad to play in the 2012 T20 World Cup.

In an interview with Hindustan Times Yuvraj said, “Simple things like breathing, enjoying food, the small pleasures of life that we take for granted, become precious. The bodily suffering, when I was choking while trying to breathe, when I couldn’t digest anything each time I had chemo, when I would be a mental and physical wreck, made me realise that living a normal life is a blessing and should not be frittered away by fretting over things which are beyond your control.”

Apart from these sporting stars, many Olympics athletes have battled cancer and gotten back to their winning ways. Figure Skater Scott Hamilton was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1997. After a year of chemotherapy and surgery, Hamilton got back to the rink.

Lance Armstong, Martina Navratilova, and Phil Kessel are among the sportsperson who have made their mark in their respective games after battling cancer.
