Giorgia Meloni and her Brothers of Italy are now in power in Italy. Among the things she has done is strengthening bilateral relations with India.
The bilateral ties between India and Italy have only enhanced after Giorgia Meloni took office last year. Meloni has already made two trips to India this year. First, she visited the country as the guest of honor at the Raisina Dialogue. And the second was her official visit to the G20 summit under India’s presidency.
The Raisina Dialogue was important on several counts. Not only did India and Italy boost their strategic partnership at the Raisina Dialogue, but they also laid the importance of the Indo-Pacific region.
The growing ties between India and Italy highlight Rome’s growing interest in the Indo-Pacific region.
In her speech at the Raisina Dialogue, Meloni mentioned the repercussions in Europe of the happenings in the Indo-Pacific region. Meloni also mentioned that a “connection between Mediterranean and Indi-Pacific” is of extreme importance both for India and Europe.
An article published on The Diplomat mentions the following:
“This bilateral meeting occurred as Italy and India celebrate 75 years since the establishment of formal diplomatic relations and visibly mark the beginning of a new phase in their relationship…”
Following her visit in March this year, she made a second trip to New Delhi for the G20 Summit. At the prestigious G20 Summit, PM Narendra Modi and his Italian counterpart discussed further strengthening the ties between the two countries. In addition to appreciating Italy’s joining the Global Biofuel Alliance, PM Modi congratulated Meloni for her appreciation of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.
PM Modi also made an official statement appreciating Italy’s support of India’s G20 Presidency.
Prime Minister took to his official X handle and mentioned the following:
“I had an excellent meeting with PM @GiorgiaMeloni. Our talks covered sectors such as trade, commerce, defense, emerging technologies, and more. India and Italy will keep working together for global prosperity.”
PM Modi also stated the importance of G7 and G20 to work in tandem for the greater good of the countries.
An article published in India Today mentions the following:
“This is the second visit of Prime Minister Meloni to India following her State visit in March this year, during which bilateral relations were raised to the level of a Strategic Partnership.
Modi has been holding bilateral talks with a host of leaders who have arrived here for the G20 Summit.”
