While it is true that Indian farmers face a lot of socio-economic difficulties, old farming concepts such as Adhiya have always benefited farmers.

What is Adhiya?

Adhiya is an Awadhi word that literally means half. Adhiya, in farming, refers to a verbal agreement between the landowner and the farmer, where both parties share the costs and the harvest equally. The concept of Adhiya is popular in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Prades, and Rajasthan. However, similar concepts exist in the rest of India, albeit with different names.

While adhiya farming has its benefits, it does have several downsides. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of adhiya:

Advantages:

One: Landless farmers get work

One of the major upsides of Adhiya is that landless farmers get work. Farmers can choose to be their own masters when they decide not to serve their masters and instead opt for adhiya. Adhiya farming empowers farmers because it allows them a certain degree of freedom.

Two: landowner and the farmer share half of the produce

In adhiya farming, a farmer is more vigilant because what is raised is theirs. From bearing the cost of fertilizers to sharing the produce, adhiya provides a just way of farming.

Three: Landowners can lees out their land without any worries

While there are several advantages of adhiya for farmers, the same is true for landowners. Most landowners live in cities and are involved with various occupations other than farming. Adhiya provides a fantastic opportunity for landowners because it allows them to focus on other work.

Disadvantages

One: No compensation for farmers

One sad reality of adhiya is that farmers usually get no compensation from the state or insurance companies in case crops are damaged due to untimely rain, extreme cold, or hailstorm. The landowners get all the compensation and the tenant is left without any relief.

Two: The tenant farmer is always insecure

Most adhiya farmers do not have access to support services such as insurance and institutional credit. Often, tenant farmers have to solely rely on landowners to borrow money for the next harvest.
