A 41-year-old man was killed after his bike was rammed by a speeding car in a hit-and-run incident in south Delhi’s Greater Kailash-I on Tuesday, police said Wednesday. The impact was so severe that the victim died on the spot, officials said.

The deceased, Surendra Das, worked as a cook for an elderly couple in B block of GK-I for nearly two decades. On Tuesday night, after finishing his dinner duties, he left to buy groceries barely a few metres from his residence when a speeding car struck him, police officials aware of the case details said.
A senior police officer said the accident occurred around 8.15pm. “There were not many people around. Locals said a car came at a speed of 100-120 kmph. This was inside the locality, not on the main road. The car hit the bike with great force, flinging the victim into the air before he crashed near a tree.”
Deputy commissioner of police (south) Anant Mittal said a PCR call was received at night, and it was found that Das’ motorcycle was struck by an unknown car whose driver fled the scene before locals could intervene.
A case under BNS sections 281 (rash driving) and 106(1) (causing death by negligence) was lodged. Das was rushed to the National Heart Institute by ambulance, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Police said the vehicle, a white Maruti Ciaz, has been identified through CCTV footage, and investigators are tracing the owner and driver. The driver was not a resident of B-block and appeared to be visiting someone or passing through, according to an investigator. Footage shows the car driving in a zigzag manner at high speed. Das was barely 100 metres from home when he was killed.
DCP added that raids are being conducted in specific areas to catch the accused and surveillance has been mounted on the accused to trace him.
Das is survived by his wife Meena and their three children – a daughter aged 17 and two sons aged 15 and 16. Meena said her daughter is appearing for Class 12 exams, and the family had been looking forward to her college admissions.
“Her father wanted her to become a teacher. My sons are in Class 9 and Class 10. Who will take care of all of us? My husband had been working here for more than 20 years. Where will we go now?” said his wife.
She added that the family was planning a small party for the children after their exams. “His head was crushed by the car.”
